Bad elbow sends Red Sox's Beckett to DL (AP)

Josh Beckett was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right elbow after the Boston ace was examined by Dr. James Andrews. "Everything came out, the word would be awesome, from our standpoint," manager Terry Francona said. "Everything was clean. There were a number of tests and Josh came thought with flying colors.

Alfonso Soriano hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Friday for their seventh straight win, Soriano's first homer in 15 days and 23rd of the season came off Clay Condrey (3-4). The Atlanta Braves added a veteran arm Friday, activating Elmer Dessens two days after agreeing to terms with the right-hander. The 37-year-old Dessens is 48-61 with a 4.52 ERA in 356 appearances, including 140 starts, during 11 seasons with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Arizona, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Colorado.
