Bizarre triple helps Red Sox top Yankees (AP)

In this photo combo, New York Yankees Johnny Damon attempts to catch a ball hit deep by Boston Red Sox's Kevin Youklis during the third inning of a baseball game Friday, July 4, 2008 at Yankee Stadium in New York. The ball slipped out of Damon's glove and the hit was ruled a two-run triple. Damon left the game after the play.

Yankee Stadium has a history of drama on the Fourth of July. There was Lou Gehrig's farewell speech in 1939, and Dave Righetti's no-hitter against Boston in 1983. It's George Steinbrenner's birthday, so it's always an important date to circle on New York's calendar. Kevin Youkilis made the final Fourth at the ballpark truly memorable, sparking a come-from-behind 6-4 victory for the Red Sox on Friday...

Tribe designates Borowski for assignment (AP)
Indians closer Joe Borowski, last year's American League saves leader, was designated for assignment on Friday. The right-hander blew his fourth save in 10 chances on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, and was 1-3 with a 7.56 ERA in 18 games this season. Borowski had 45 saves last season but has struggled since returning from an arm injury.

Brewers' Yost downplays Sabathia rumors (AP)
If the Brewers are considered a front-runner in the C.C. Sabathia sweepstakes, manager Ned Yost wanted nothing to do with it on Friday. "A rumor's a rumor," Yost said before Milwaukee's 9-1 win against Pittsburgh. "We don't pay attention to it too much." According to recent reports, Milwaukee's surplus of minor league talent has given the organization an upper hand in the competition to acquire...

Braves option OF Francoeur to Double-A (AP)
The Atlanta Braves decided their hometown favorite needed to get away from home -- and away from the major leagues -- to work his way through the worst slump of his career. Outfielder Jeff Francoeur, hitting only .234, was sent to Double-A Mississippi on Friday and told he'd be recalled within three weeks.

Pena's 5 RBIs run Rays' win streak to 5 (AP)
Kansas City Royals shortstop Mike Aviles drops a throw from catcher John Buck allowing Tampa Bay Rays' B.J. Upton to advance to third base during the third inning of a baseball game Friday, July 4, 2008, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Edwin Jackson took a two-hitter into the eighth inning and Carlos Pena homered and drove in five runs Friday night, helping the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 11-2 for their fifth straight victory. Jackson (5-6) matched his win total for last season, limiting the Royals to David DeJesus' first-inning single and Mark Grudzielanek's solo homer in the seventh before giving...

La Russa riled by Edmonds' return (AP)
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa wasn't exactly overjoyed to see his former star center fielder back in town wearing a Chicago Cubs uniform. Miffed by Jim Edmonds' comments that he was happy to be with the Cubs and tired of talking about his past, La Russa said Friday he'd ignore the four-time All-Star in his first visit as an opposing player.

Zambrano activated, will start vs. Cards (AP)
The Chicago Cubs activated pitcher Carlos Zambrano from the 15-day disabled list in time to start Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. The right-handed pitcher left his start on June 18 against Tampa Bay because of pain in his right shoulder. Tests showed a minor strain. Zambrano took the loss in that game, allowing five runs -- four earned -- in 6 2-3 innings.

Dodgers get healthy, win fourth straight (AP)
Los Angeles Dodgers' Andre Ethier tosses his bat after being called out on strikes in the eighth inning of a baseball game against the San Francisco Giants Friday, July 4, 2008, in San Francisco.

Joe Torre has a feeling his team is starting to come together. The Dodgers are getting healthy, too. Los Angeles welcomed back Nomar Garciaparra and Andruw Jones from the disabled list with an impressive win against its archrival. Andre Ethier homered and hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth, Derek Lowe won for the first time in three starts and the Dodgers rallied to beat the Giants 10-7 on...

A Colorado Rockies' season soured by injury and inconsistency took yet another ugly turn Friday when slumping slugger Todd Helton went on the disabled list for just the third time in his career. "It's definitely a relief to get a chance to feel better and hopefully be productive when I get back," said Helton, whose strained lower back landed him on the 15-day DL.

Vicente Padilla emerged from his second straight ineffective start for the Texas Rangers with a sore collarbone, a bruised right thumb and an inflated ERA. Freddie Bynum had three RBIs after being added to the lineup shortly before game time, and the Baltimore Orioles roughed up Padilla in a 10-4 win Friday.
